Lithological Description: |
Silts, clays, sands and gravels, underlying the floodplains of the Cumbrian Esk catchment. At the Type Section the top part of the alluvial sequence coarsens downwards from brown clay into sand. |
Definition of Lower Boundary: |
Sharply erosional, unconformable on all older Quaternary deposits (particularly till at the Type Section) and on bedrock. |
Definition of Upper Boundary: |
The ground surface, or overlain by peat of the Blelhem Peat Formation, or overlain by blown sand of the Drigg Point Sand Formation. |
Thickness: |
11.58m at the Type Section, but probably typically 5 to 10m thick in the type area. |
