A thick, laterally persistent limestone. In the Northumberland Trough and Solway Basin, the base of the Alston Formation is defined at the base of the Peghorn Limestone or its correlatives. |

In the Northumberland Trough and Solway Basin, the base of the Alston Formation, defined at the base of the Peghorn Limestone (or its correlatives), lies conformably on the Tyne Limestone Formation. In the Brough-under-Stainmore and Penrith districts the Peghorn Limestone is underlain by siltstone or sandstone of the Wintertarn Sandstone Member, Tyne Limestone Formation. |
