Blue Lias Formation (Hebrides) and Breakish Formation, Interdigitated

Computer Code: BLBRK Preferred Map Code: notEntered
Status Code: Index Level
Age range: Hettangian Age (JH) — Sinemurian Age (JS)
Lithological Description: Composite consisting of two or more rock units. This is necessitated because there is a N-S facies change from shallow-water Breakish Formation [BRKH] (the former Broadford Beds BFB) on Raasay and Skye (though there is also some interdigitation there) to deeper water, alternating limestone and mudstone of the Blue Lias Formation [BLIH] in Morvern and Mull. In Ardnamurchan the 2 facies interdigitate in about 50-50 proportions (Oates 1976, 1978; Hesselbo et al., 1998). See the entries for the constituent units for more information.
