Byth Till Formation

Computer Code: BYTIL Preferred Map Code: notEntered
Status Code: Full
Age range: Devensian Stage (QD) — Devensian Stage (QD)
Lithological Description: Gravelly, slightly clayey, silty sand diamicton. Interpreted as a subglacial till. Dark reddish brown, weakly calcareous, matrix supported. Clast lithologies are dominated by quartzite, psammitic metasedimentary rocks and red Devonian sandstones and shale. Clasts are typically subangular to subrounded and Devonian shale lithologies are striated. Clast fabrics indicate glacial transport from the west. Interpreted as a subglacial till.
Definition of Lower Boundary: The lower boundary of the unit is sharp, planar, subhorizontal unconformity on gravels of the Howe of Byth Gravel Formation. To the west of the Howe of Byth quarry the Byth Till has been observed sharply unconformable on Devonian red sandstones.
Definition of Upper Boundary: The upper boundary of the formation is a sharp, undulatory (relief up to 1m) erosional unconformity overlain by the Auchmeddon Gravel Formation.
Thickness: To 3m
Geographical Limits: Buchan, northeast Scotland. The formation is known from the vicinity of the Howe of Byth quarry on Sheet 97 (Fraserburgh), but may be regionally significant and present locally across northeast Scotland.
Parent Unit: East Grampian Glacigenic Subgroup (EGD)
