Lithological Description: Calcareous, banded psammite and semipelite, grey and pale green, normally flaggy but schistose in places. Tremolitic amphibole commonly conspicuous in hand specimen. Thin beds of impure metalimestone locally.
Definition of Lower Boundary: At incoming of calcareous (greenish, tremolite-bearing) psammites and semipelites above the non-calcareous Findlater Flag Formation.
Definition of Upper Boundary: Below graphitic pelites with beds of pure metalimestone comprising the Mortlach Graphitic Schist Formation.
Thickness: c. 1200m in coastal section.
Geographical Limits: 1) R. Fiddich NW of Dufftown to Forgie, Clochan and Cairnfield House (Sheets 85E and 95). 2) Craibstone and Deskford to Crathie Point and Garron Point (Sheet 96). (Below Keith Shear-Zone; probably equivalent stratigraphically to Pitlurg Calcareous Flag Formation above the Keith Shear-Zone.)
