Definition of Lower Boundary: Normally fireclay underlying the lower boundary, with presumably a conformable contacts.
Definition of Upper Boundary: Mudstone above, also probably conformable. In the western part of the area the overlying unit can be an erosionally based sandstone.
Thickness: Up to 1.5 m thick, in two leaves.
Geographical Limits: Main Clackmannan Coalfield, Stirling, Alloa, Midland Valley of Scotland.
Parent Unit: Scottish Lower Coal Measures Formation (LCMS)
