Lithological Description: Orthoquartzite, fawn to white; cross-bedded with pinkish haematite streaks. Thin micaceous interbeds common. Gritty in parts. Flaggy, micaceous psammites locally at top and base.
Definition of Lower Boundary: At lower limit of persistent pasmmite or quartzite above the Mortlach Graphitic Schist Formation.
Definition of Upper Boundary: At upper limit of persistent psammite or quartzite below phyllites and calcareous schists of the Ailnack Phyllite and Limestone Formation or the Cock Burn Calcareous Schist Formation.
Thickness: Generally 80-300m. Wider outcrops may be due to folding.
Geographical Limits: Loch Builg, Inchrory and Carn Mor, upper Strath Don northwards via Glen Avon, Glen Livet. Glen Fiddich to the Balloch Hills near Keith. Small outcrops farther north around Windyhills. 1:50 000 Sheets 75W, 75E, 85E, 86W, 96 (just).
