Lithological Description: A soft red sandstone with abundant beds of "millet seed" sand grains alternating with beds of fine-grained sharp sand (Tonks, and others, 1931); some interbedded grey sandstones locally.
Definition of Lower Boundary: Lower boundary is a major plane of unconformity, generally on reddened Carboniferous Coal Measures strata.
Definition of Upper Boundary: Taken at the point where red mudstone and siltstone, characteristic of the overlying Manchester Marls, become predominant over sandstone.
Thickness: Ranges from 0 - 262m in type area and 0 - 715m around Formby (Falcon and Kent, 1960).
Geographical Limits: Lancashire and Cheshire.

Type Area  North and east Manchester. Collyhurst is about 3km north east of Manchester City Centre. (Hull, 1864, fig.9, p.38-39 described a former section at Collyhurst, the precise location of which is now uncertain).
