Lithological Description: Mudstone, red-brown, with halite beds and veins, and common mudstone breccias formed from halite dissolution.
Definition of Lower Boundary: Conformable, at gradational upward transition from red-brown mudstone to mudstone with halite at the base of the Esk Evaporite Member.
Definition of Upper Boundary: Conformable, at gradational transition from mudstone with halite of the Esk Evaporite Member to red-brown mudstone of the undifferentiated Sidmouth Mudstone Formation.
Thickness: 7 m at the type section, ranges up to 50 m.
Geographical Limits: Cleveland, northeast England. Proved only in the subsurface, not mapped at outcrop.
Parent Unit: Sidmouth Mudstone Formation (SIM)
