Lithological Description: Clast-supported gravel with subrounded to rounded clasts up to cobble grade of Borrowdale Volcanic Group igneous rocks, siltstone, lithic sandstone; some red sandstone, white sandstone, coal and granite. Sparse (reworked) shell fragments and dinoflagellate cysts present in sandier parts of the unit.
Definition of Lower Boundary: At its type section it overlies till of the Seascale Glacigenic Formation; elsewhere its basal contact is not seen, but the unit occurs stratigraphically above possible Winney Hill Coppice Clay Member of the Aikbank Glacigenic Formation in the Kirkton Wood West Section [log NY00SE(S) ME 166; Nirex Science Report SA/97/045 (Issue 2.0) 1997].
Definition of Upper Boundary: Unconformably overlain by the Drigg Beach Till Member of the the Gosforth Glacigenic Formation, with the uppermost c.0.3m (below the contact) pervasively sheared.
Thickness: 6.8m thick at its type section.
Geographical Limits: 1:50k Sheet 37 Gosforth. Drigg to Santon Bridge area, western Cumbria.

Reference Section  c.3.1m of sand and gravel with shell fragments exposed near the base of a degraded river cliff in Kirkland Wood, eastern side of River Irt, 600m north of Kirklands Farm, c.1km northeast of Holmrook village, west Cumbria.
