Lithological Description: Typically a subangular conglomerate with locally-derived clasts in a red, sandy mudstone matrix. Buff sandstones interbedded with mudstones constitute a distal facies.
Definition of Lower Boundary: An irregular unconformity surface on rocks of Precambrian to Palaeozoic age.
Definition of Upper Boundary: Sharply and in places unconformably overlain by sandstones or mudstones of Permian to Triassic age.
Thickness: Highly variable, generally 0-15m but can range up to 55m.
Geographical Limits: The unit is widely distributed at the base of the Triassic or Permian of the East Midlands, extending from Measham northwards as far as the Chesterfield area.
