Mariner Formation

Computer Code: MRN Preferred Map Code: notEntered
Status Code: Pending Upgrade
Age range: Marine Isotope Stage 12 (QMIS012) — Marine Isotope Stage 6 (QMIS006)
Lithological Description: A sequence of sandy, silty clays with sand and clay layers interspersed. Pebbly and shelly sequences within the strata. Base of unit is largely silty sand, well sorted but with clayey partings. Unit below is sandy, as is the base of the Mariner Formation - faunal changes indicate boundary is in off-lapping sequence. Upper boundary is also sandy with a very marked erosion surface.
Definition of Lower Boundary: Lower boundary is an off-lapping/disconformable boundary with the underlying Shackleton Formation.
Definition of Upper Boundary: Upper boundary is a marked erosion surface underlying the Ferder Formation.
Thickness: 110 metres at Borehole 78/9. Thins to the south and southwest. Thickens to the north. May be largely eroded away in the southern parts of the Norwegian Trench.
Geographical Limits: Not defined.
Parent Unit: Hjaltland Glacigenic Group (HJG)
