Skerry Group

Computer Code: SKRY Preferred Map Code: notEntered
Status Code: Full
Age range: Sinemurian Age (JS) — Pliensbachian Age (JE)
Lithological Description: The term Skerry Group was introduced by Ritchie et al. (1996) for a succession of Lower Jurassic shallow marine deposits within the North Rona Basin that lie below the Humber Group. The Skerry Group comprises the Stack Skerry and Sule Skerry formations.
Definition of Lower Boundary: The base of the group has not been penetrated.
Definition of Upper Boundary: none recorded or not applicable
Thickness: The Skerry Group attains a maximum, unbottomed, drilled thickness of 770 m within the North Rona Basin.
Geographical Limits: The distribution of the Skerry Group appears very restricted within the west of Shetland area although it may be present at depth within the Faeroe-Shetland Basin and to the south of the study area in the North Lewis and North Minch basins (Stoker et al., 1993).
