Lithological Description: Predominantly red, brown or purple-grey sandstone, siltstone and mudstone, some grey strata, coals not common, local conglomerates, localised beds of Spirorbis limestone.
Definition of Lower Boundary: At gradational conformable base of the lowest red-bed formation, which is generally the red mudstones of the Etruria Formation above the Coal Measures, at the sharp unconformable base of red-beds of late Carboniferous age if the Coal Measures are absent, or locally at the base of grey beds, seen as grey-green sandstone of the Halesowen Formation.
Definition of Upper Boundary: At the base of the unconformable (post-Variscan) Permian or younger strata.
Thickness: About 1225 m thick in Warwickshire, up to 1192 m thick in the Stoke-on-Trent area.
Geographical Limits: The Pennine Basin in Staffordshire, Warwickshire, Shropshire, Lancashire, Nottinghamshire and South Yorkshire.
