Lithological Description: |
The term Windermere Supergroup was introduced by Kneller et al. (1994) for the folded and cleaved marine carbonate and clastic sedimentary rocks that lie above the unconformity at the top of the Caradoc volcanic rocks in the Lake District and adjacent inliers in northern England, but below unconformably overlying Devonian Old Red Sandstone or basal Carboniferous rocks. The oldest strata, assigned to the Dent Group, are Late Ordovician in age, whilst the remainder are Silurian. |
Definition of Lower Boundary: |
The unconformity at the top of the Caradoc volcanic rocks in the Lake District and adjacent inliers in northern England. |
Definition of Upper Boundary: |
Unconformably overlain by Devonian Old Red Sandstone or basal Carboniferous rocks. |
Thickness: |
c. 4500 m. |
Geographical Limits: |
