Lithological Description: Hard grey, coarse-grained sandstone and conglomeratic sandstones. Some cross-bedding and poorly-preserved coniferous woody fragments at Higher Knowle Wood [SX 7921 8103] (Blythe and Shearman, 1962).
Definition of Lower Boundary: Near to Wolleigh, a faulted contact with the Dartmoor Granite; elsewhere, poorly defined, but discordant on the Dartmoor granite or metamorphosed pre-Cretaceous rocks.
Definition of Upper Boundary: Locally, unconformable relationships with Head.
Thickness: Up to 24 m.
Geographical Limits: The Bovey Formation underlies the low ground between Bovey Tracey and Newton Abbot, south Devon. Exposures of the Wooley Grit have been noted near to Wolleigh House [SX 804 797] and in Higher Knowle Wood [SX 793 809] by Blythe and Shearman (1962). An exposure of a similar rock type has been noted north of Chagford between [SX 766 013] and [SX 713 902] by Edmonds and others, 1968, and included in the Bovey Formation by these authors.
