Try our BETA BGS Sensor Data Service. This development service provides an application programming interface (API) for data scientists, software developers and software applications to query and download BGS-hosted sensor data in machine-readable JSON format.
Sensor data access
Real-time monitoring of environmental phenomena is a large and growing area of interest in the BGS and wider research communities.
As a digital first geological survey we are tasked with providing scalable, robust ways of managing high volume, highly varied data, generated by a range of scientific projects, including:
Environmental Baseline Monitoring
BGS is monitoring environmental baseline conditions in relation to potential shale gas development in the UK.
Lancashire Site
This observatory contains 5 monitored locations.
CSV data downloads are available for data from 2016 to the present
Vale of Pickering Site
This observatory contains 4 monitored locations.
CSV data downloads are available for data from 2016 to the present
UK Geoenergy Observatories (UKGEOS)
In Glasgow and Rutherglen, we have begun to observe flooded mine workings beneath the east end of the city.
This data will help us to understand the processes and impacts of this heat source and potential heat store as a sustainable way of heating homes and businesses in our cities.
Glasgow Site
Reports, documents and data are available from the UKGEOS Data Downloads page.
Sensor data is now available from our BETA BGS Sensor Data Service
Cardiff Urban Geo Observatory
In Cardiff, we're improving our understanding of the way groundwater moves around in a complex geological environment changed by industrialisation and urban growth. The observatory is looking at shallow geothermal heat recovery and storage.
Ground Source Heat Pump Monitoring Site
This observatory contains 2 monitored locations.
Reports, documents and data are available from the UKGEOS Data Downloads page.
