Author statement Original geological survey at 1:10 560 scale by W.T. Aveline, A.C.G. Cameron and R. Russell in 1871-72. Published at 1:63 360 scale in 1881. Revised at 1:10 560 scale by T. Eastwood, F.M. Trotter S.E. Hollingworth and W.C.C. Rose in 1932. Published at 1:63 360 scale in 1937. Re-issue as a combined Gosforth (Sheet 37) and Bootle (Sheet 47) sheet, with minor amendments by L.C. Jones, at 1:50 000 scale in 1980. Revised in 1989-1997, incorporating United Kingdom Nirex Limited information from boreholes, new geological mapping and geophysical surveys. The interpretation of these data included contributions from the following BGS geologists: R.P. Barnes, P.M. Allen, B. Beddoe Stephens, M.G. Petterson, E.R. Phillips and S.R. Young. Additional contributions by G.S. Kimbell and D. Millward. Compiled by R.P. Barnes, A.A.M. Irving and K.A.T. MacPherson. D.J. Fettes, Regional Geologist.
